I've been going through some of my archives from earlier travels, and came across this shot taken at sunset down in Sihanoukville. We were having dinner in a seafood restaurant, and I started taking pictures of the kids playing in the water after a day on the beach. Just wish I'd had the camera I have now back then...this one was taken with my first digital camera, a Nikon Coolpix 5200 (which was a GREAT camera, unlike the P5100 I have now and never use). It's a little grainier than I'd like, but the mood is nice.

I think it's clear by now that I'm not updating this site very often...life has gotten in the way, and I don't have as much time to be on the computer as I used to. I am, however, still shooting quite a bit and editing whenever I have the time. This shot is my latest attempt at a panorama, shot from the top of the aptly named Panorama Ridge above Garibaldi Lake. We'd hiked in the day before, and took these shots before butt-sliding down the snow pack down the back of the mountain.

A shot of the actual 'Black Tusk'...since you can see the tusk from different vantage points around Garibaldi Lake, I have a lot of shots with different angles and lighting. I like this one though because it shows some of the human aspect of actually climbing the darn thing, complete with a sense of its size, the temperature, and the unstable volcanic shale all over the final ascent. I also like it because you can't see the large cellphone towers in behind the tusk...this was one of the few times on the hike when I had full cell service.

A month or so ago, I took a weekend to hike and climb near Garibaldi Lake. It was a long day, so by the time we neared the top of Black Tusk where this photo was taken, it was well into the evening and we started getting bursts of warm light over the mountains. This shot was taken looking down Black Tusk toward the Tantalus Mountains.

So I've been saying for a while that one thing I miss from back east is the thunderstorms that would sweep in a wreck havoc for 1/2 hour or so before disappearing. Vancouver finally answered the call...in style!!! A brilliant sunset was competing with huge purple thunderclouds and lightning coming off the mountain. I'd been out for a walk on the Granville St. bridge, and ended up staying out and shooting for as long as possible. Around 10pm, the fireworks that had been scheduled that night started up at English Bay, adding to an already dramatic evening!

Thanks to a good friend, I now have a whole bunch of my older film shots digitzied on my computer! I took this shot 8 or 9 years ago while backpacking through southern Thailand. I was heading down to Malaysia and was in transit in Hat Yai when an elephant happened to stroll by in front of me. What I like best about it is the sense of normalcy in the scene...nothing out of the ordinary here, just regular everyday traffic!

Alright, terrible puns aside, I came across this guy up on top of Grouse Mountain after a quick hike. He's part of a bird show they run up there, and as my friend and I were walking back toward the gondola down the mountain, we came across his trainers transporting him between shelters.

So I've been practicing a little bit more with Photoshop as of late (although I have to confess, I still favour shooting straight out of the camera whenever possible...I'm not that in to heavily processed images). Anyway, this is the original colour version of a black and white I posted earlier here:

Spring Bloom

It was shot with my 50mm lens and a yellow filter, then I played around with it a bit on my computer to get it to look like this. Not sure which I like better...

Also, thanks to all those who continue to post on this blog...I know I've been terrible with updates lately, but it's been a HUGE year and I don't always have the time I used to for posting!

A stroll out through the back alleys near Gastown lead to some very cool graffiti...and some not so nice experiences with a crazy woman mumbling to no one as she picked up and tossed a dead rat at a wall nearby.
